FAQ

As a stylist behind the chair, I get asked questions all the time.  I never feel like questions are silly, I figure if you have to ask then its important to you.  I think some stylists forget that we are spoiled to be living in the way of fashion, science and inspiration on a daily basis.  Here are some FAQ that I hear.  I am answering from an educator perspective and also from years of experience from behind the chair.  If you have questions that you want me to address, please do not hesitate in asking.  I will address them as soon as possible.  Keep Calm and Style on!

Is box color really that bad?

Yes and no.  Here is some interesting information: The companies that make box color and sell you market haircare that you can purchase at your local food markets, fund their larger counterparts and professional brands like L'oreal, Redken and Pureology.  What we have to understand is that they let you assume that everyones hair is the same.  That your hair is the same as the person next door or on another continent from you.  As an educated person, we know that this isnt  necessarily true, but as a consumer we are lead by last minute decisions and impulse buying.  We also know that sex sells.  So the image we see on the box labled "Jeniffer Aniston Blonde" is clearly going to give us her color.  I've talked to her colorist and stylist, and I'll tell you right now, there is not even a chance in hell thats happening. They create a product that can be mass distributed for lower prices.  Because they know that the "Principles of Hair Color" is the same universally, they are able to create those products, knowing that ideally the results will have a "professional result".  What we also have to worry about, are the many things that can go awry when box coloring.  IT IS NEVER ADVISED TO BOX COLOR YOUR HAIR AT HOME.  Allergic reactions to the color such as redness, burning, itching, burning, swelling, skin abrasions, eruptions, irritations, flushing, breathing problems and or tightening of the chest can occur. We also know, that human error in application can creat spotty and uneven color.  The best way to get your color is from a professional. Period.  Why risk mediocre color, your safety or you helath.  And know your rights, ask your stylist for a "Patch Test".  Also, as a stylist, we are able to custom color your hairs individual needs.  And we love making money, so that box color that you need corrected is now going to cost you a pretty penny - thanks for the new shoes!  Below is a video that went viral in 2013 of a boy who had an allergic reaction to box coloring at home.

What Is A "Patch Test"?

Here is the form I have every one of my guests sign.  It is also posted in the salon:

It is recognized that some persons have allergies to certain foods, drugs, cosmetics, etc. and might share a sensitivity to hair coloring products.  The Patch Test is the easiest way to detect such sensitivity. Done 48 hours before every application/visit, on virgin or retouched hair, what is recommended is that as your stylist, I am supposed to wash an area the size of a quarter in the bend of the clients elbow with soap and water.  Then, prepare a test solution of the exact shade (or mixture of shades) to be used according to the product mixing instructions using the appropriate developer. Next, I am supposed to apply the mixture to the test area, using an absorbent cotton-tipped applicator.  We then let the test spot dry uncovered or undisturbed for 48 hours.  At home, you are to examine the test area periodically over 48 hours.  If no reaction has occurred you are ready to color.

I am supposed to alert you, my Guest(s), that if any abnormal reactions such as redness, burning, itching, swelling, skin abrasions, eruptions or irritations appear at or around the test area or any place the product has come in to contact with the skin at any time up to a few days after the application, that I am to rinse the area with luke warm water.  It is further recommended that we do not use this or any other hair color product until after consulting a physician.

If any reactions, including breathing problems, tightening of the chest, heart palpitations, lightheadedness, flushing, itching or bumps or swelling away from the place the product has come into contact with the skin, occur during or shortly after application of the Patch Test, that we have to rinse immediately.  I am to alert my Guest(s) not to use this or any other hair color product again until after consulting a physician.

This is not a scare tactic by any means.  But things happen.  If you would like to have a Patch Test, The RootsAreForTrees Team will be more than accommodating and would love to perform the Patch Test for you.  However, we know that you have a busy schedule and that coming in 48 hours before every appointment is time consuming.  Although we have never had any problems, and some irritation is expected, we want to inform you of some of your rights.

Your health and safety is very important to us, you have the right to ask for a Patch Test before this and every visit.  But it is up to you as our Guest to let us know.  By signing this, you know that you are supposed to have a Patch Test but are choosing to forgo the Patch Test this visit and every visit until you otherwise indicate.  You will be asked once a year to re-sign this form.  If you have any questions or concerns, please talk with your stylist.

"I Always Feel Like My Hair Goes "Brassy," help!"

One womans "brass" is another womans "gold".  What Im trying to say is that because we see color differently, theres no sure fire way of attacking this issue.  Here's the deal with brassyness:  it is different for everyone.  Sometimes its gold, other times its blorange.  The best way to beat brassyness is to have a healthy consultation with your Stylist.  Bring in pictures and write on the back of them, what you like about specific things about the picture/color.  As a saving grace, most of the time, a glaze will help balance unwanted shades of color and give you incredible shine.  Its easy and takes about 20 minutes, depending on results wanted.  Always ask your Stylist for a consultation before any color service, it is the easiest way to beat the brass!  At SALON1803, we only garuantee our colors, if you use our products.  End of story.

"I want to go back to my natural color, what's the best way to do that?"
The best way to go back to your natural color, depends on the amount of artificial color left on your hair. Its called a Tint Back when you want to go back to your natural color and you have artificial color on your hair..  All Tint Backs are technically a color correction, and as with every color correction, in order to preserve your hairs integrity, it will take at least three visits before your hair will react and looks the way you and the Stylist will be comfortable with.  Ask your Stylist for a consultation and be sure to ask questions such as:  length of time for todays visit,  length of future visits, how much it will cost and what will happen if you decide to go back to the color before you asked for the Tint Back.

"My hair is thining, what can I do?"

Thinning hair can be a cause of many things, heredity, diet, stress and chronically aged hair.  The treatments out there do work, as long as you stick to the regime.  The treatments only maintain your current hair density, and in some cases it might even add to the thickness.  But understand, that once you stop using the treatment regime, you hair will go back to it original texture.  Adding supplements to your diet, such as Bioten, B6,B12 and zinc have shown great success at growing hair and maintaining its integrety.  But supplements alone will not do.  Please consult a physician before adding any supplements to your diet.  They will be better equipped to helping you decide if this is the proper chanel to take. Stress usually shows itself in the form of breakage, especially around the hair line for women.  And as far as chronically aged hair or heredity, do not be discouraged by your naturally thinning hair.  A proper cut can do wonders.  And at the very least, there's nothing a hat cant fix.
